Black Pride is
Black Pride is not a trend.
Black Pride is not an accessory.
It is not something you wear to go meet your hipster friends.
not a book you skimmed on Spark Notes.
not a profile picture of MLK for a month.
not a dashiki-print you can pick up at a thrift store
or a “Fight The Power” button on your acid washed denim jacket.
Black Pride is not a Zulu mask on your wall.
not a collection of incense and ankh rings.
it’s not dreads or an afro or a wood bead bracelet-wrapped fist.
Black Pride is more than a playlist of the Roots and Public Enemy.
It is more than a black beret and leather jackets.
More than Jordan’s and hightop fades.
More than 28 days on a calendar.
More than a medallion on your neck.
More than a few lines strung together in a text editor.
More than a Spike Lee Joint.
More than a Malcolm X t-shirt.
More than a Huey P poster.
More than a bell hooks collection.
Black Pride is more than feeling or a mindset.
It is the collective aspiration of a people - trampled, enslaved, degraded, and held underfoot for centuries - fighting, clawing, by any means necessary, to return to a throne that is rightfully ours.
